A Proud Heritage

Giving Back a World of Good to WEL Residents

Humble Beginnings. In 1888, The Evangelical Association of Churches established the German Home for the Aged, formerly known as Wesley Enhanced Living at Evangelical Manor and now known as Wesley Enhanced Living Pennypack Park, in Philadelphia. Throughout the decades, additional residences were aquired to meet the need for increasing numbers of retirees.

Steady Growth. As we grew, the need for financial support, particularly benevolent care, increased. Evangelical Manor Foundation was created in 1975 to accept, invest, and distribute financial gifts in support of residents of these communities, particularly the need for benevolent care. In 1989, Evangelical Services for the Aging [ESA] was formed as a new corporation to oversee the communities of Wesley Enhanced Living Pennypack Park and Wesley Enhanced Living Doylestown; later Wesley Enhanced Living Upper Moreland and Wesley Enhanced Living Burholme were added to its mission.

Restructuring for Strength. In keeping with this change, the Evangelical Manor Foundation became the Evangelical Services for the Aging Foundation. Then in 2003, the autonomous Boards of the four ESA communities* restructured to operate as one and hired a new President and CEO. Within a year of this development, Evangelical Services for the Aging was renamed Wesley Enhanced Living (WEL), and Evangelical Services for the Aging Foundation became The Wesley Enhanced Living Foundation. We seek to advance the WEL philosophy and vision through philanthropy.
